The main hall of Corelli College Co-operative Academy in Greenwich, London was filled with applause and cheers after Sir Ian McKellen foretold the future and relived a moment from ‘The Lord of the Rings’ saying: “I can tell you if you do not study and revise for your exams next year you will not pass!”
The highly successful and famous actor was delighted to be able to spend an afternoon with the College community as part of Stonewall and delivered an assembly in which he spoke of his own journey both personally and professionally to being openly gay.
Corelli College has been actively challenging homophobia and celebrating LGBT issues for over a decade and has been a Stonewall Champion for several years. Regular events in the school calendar include the whole college taking part annually in LGBT History Month, 6th form students having the opportunity to attend London Pride, students working with local Primary Schools to help tackle homophobic bullying and staff speaking at the annual Stonewall Education Conference for the last two years.
Sir Ian commented on feeling the College was among one of the most pioneering Stonewall institutions he had visited. Lucy Cuthbertson, the College Stonewall Co-ordinator, said: “Sir Ian McKellen’s visit as an ambassador and co-founder of Stonewall felt like a wonderful reward for everything the college has achieved so far.”
